I’d like to share the journey that led me here -a path shaped by inspiration, collaboration and an unwavering belief in the benefits of water for labour and birth.
In 1985 I teamed up with world-renown childbirth author and activist Janet Balaskas to open the Active Birth Centre in London.
Over 17 transformative years, I learned about the natural physiology of labour and birth and the essential dynamics that support it.
Janet’s groundbreaking approach to active birth that encourages freedom of movement, upright posture and trust in the body’s innate wisdom influenced everything I would go on to create.
I met water birth pioneer Dr. Michel Odent when he visited the Active Birth Centre to talk about water birth.
He opened my eyes to how immersion in warm water could ease labour, promote natural hormonal flow and empower women to birth instinctively.
This encounter marked the beginning of a lifelong mission.
With this foundation, I turned my focus on design.
Drawing from my passion for ergonomics and consulting with midwives, health and safety experts, and manual handling specialists, I developed water birth pools that meet the real-world needs of mothers and midwives alike.
Every feature, curve and shape has purpose – supporting instinctive movement, upright positioning, comfort and safety.
In 2014 Active Birth Pools took a major leap forward.
I partnered with high-end bath manufacturer Design and Form, whose advanced materials, bespoke manufacturing techniques and precision engineering allowed me to elevate my designs dramatically.
The result was a new generation of water birth pools – a quantum leap in every respect.
Today, Active Birth Pools are found in leading hospitals world-wide.
I’ve been honoured to receive the Building Better Healthcare Award, the European Product Design Award, and the Design MasterPrize.
These accolades reflect my continued commitment to innovation as I refine my water birth pools to maximise safety, optimise value and enhance performance.
I have dedicated the past 38 years to helping mothers and midwives have a better experience of labour and birth by developing what are widely considered the finest water birth pools available today.
